The art of being Welsh

theatre culture cardiff Itchy arts Millennium centre stadium

With new developments popping up all over the city, Cardiff is fit to burst with performance and specialist art venues. Here's our roundup of the best places to get a dose of culture

Chapter Arts Centre (Market Road, Canton, Cardiff, CF5 1QE, 029 2030 4400) is one of Europe's most dynamic art centres, with a specialist programme focusing on unique forms of art and cinema. Sounds pretentious, but it's good, honest. And after being given a rather handy £1.75 million Capital Lottery Award, they'll be able to keep Cardiff entertained for years.

And it's not just Chapter basking in the limelight of the city's art fame. Cardiff's newest arts venue is the Wales Millennium Centre (Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay, CF10 5A, 0870 040 2000). Since 2004 it's played host to some pretty hot property. Things/people to look out for include Jimmy Carr and French and Saunders, and West End shows such as The Producers.

For music, The Millennium Stadium (Wood Street, CF10) boasts the biggest names on the music scene. The likes of The Rolling Stones, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and The Police have all played here.

And Cardiff International Arena (Mary Ann Street, Cardiff, South Glamorgan CF10 2EQ, 029 2023 4500) isn't bad either, with Amy Winehouse, The Stereophonics and Rhianna among its past performers.

The Sherman Theatre (Senghennydd Road, Cardiff CF24 4YE, 029 2064 6900) is the home of the city's alternative theatre scene. There's a good deal of variety, with both English and Welsh productions on offer and is a centre for new writing and acting talent, should you be looking for thespian inspiration.
