All you can eats

When an ordinary size portion just won’t do, all you can eats are the answer. If you want to fill your belly up for the week, prove how macho you are or simply want to sample a range of foods, buffets are the way to go. Whether you’re a Thai, Indian or Pizza fan, Cardiff’s restaurants tick all the boxes. Prepare by wearing elasticised waistbands, passing on water, which takes up valuable space and leaving your date at home. Tasty as these restaurants are, beware of making weekly visits or you’ll end up resembling Rick Waller.

Best for sneakily filling up yer Tupperware.Lunch at Pizza Hut (3a Queen St, CF10 2AF, 029 20382291) can turn into dinner too is you’re sly enough to smuggle some Tupperware in your handbag. Sit in the corner and dodge the intellectually challenged wait staff. Pizza slices also prove easy to wrap up in your napkin. Beware though, pasta and salad stealing can be a little trickier and should be saved for more advanced food snatchers.  Best for spending the whole day in.

Spice Route (Hemingway Road, CF10 4DJ, 029 2048 8820) is the perfect buffet restaurant to spend your breakfast, lunch and dinner times in. The massive dining area means that the staff will won’t immediately twig that you’ve been eating as much as you can for at least 5 hours. If you need a break or want to work up more of an appetite, take it in turns to pop outside to the bowling alley, Doctor Who exhibition or the casino. The open plan Indian is great for people watching, spying on the sexy chefs and challenging fellow diners to an eat-off.

Best for having an eating showdown

Impress your mates by eating seventeen plates of noodles, six servings of duck and countless handfuls of prawn crackers at China China (110-113 St. Mary St, Cardiff, CF10 1DX, 029 20644746). If you can manage to squeeze in it, opt for a fortune cookie on your way out. This restaurant is your best bet for an eating showdown due to the easily accessed toilets and the quick exit you can make when your stomach simply can’t take any more. Warning: there is not free water available so steer clear of the spicy pork.  Best for those in denial If you’re on a health kick but want some guilt free buffet indulgence, opt for Sunday lunch at the Thai Empire (6-7 St. David's House, Wood Street, 029 2066 8838). Thai food is the less sinful version of a greasy Chinese. Steamed veg, noodles and seafood soup are all very Gillian McKeith. Sit back, relax and indulge in the delicious Thai cuisine; dining here means there’s no reason to resort to a grapefruit diet for the rest of the week.
