Calling all insomniacs
Late night shopping
Not enough hours in the day to shop? Yeah, it can be tough, but don’t panic. Every Thursday night many of the city centre shops open late. Capitol Shopping Centre (139 Queen Street, 029 2022 3683) opens ‘til 7pm and both Queens Arcade (Queen Street, 029 2022 3581) and St David’s Centre (St Davids Way, 029 2039 6041) open ‘til 8pm. Not to mention many other high street stores including Primark (43–45 Queen Street, 029 2066 8029), Monsoon (40–42, Queen Street, 029 2039 8442), and Howells (14 St Mary Street, 0870 160 7321). So now you’ll just need to find someone to help carry your bags home for you.
Late night drinking
If you’re not ready to go home when the bell sounds for last orders then head on down to Buffalo Bar (11 Windsor Place, 029 2031 2312). Their late night openings keep the beats thumping ‘til 3am on week nights and 4am at the weekends. With regular DJs, it’s a great place for a post-pub party or a late night get together. If you fancy a place with a bit more going on, then try heading to Fantasy Lounge (93 St Mary’s Street, 029 2038 2201), one of Cardiff’s premier strip clubs.
Fags at 4am
Fancy a smoke but run out of cigs? Have no fear, there are plenty of late night spots where you can pick up your nightly fix. Tesco Extra (Excelsior Road, 0845 677 9128) will be more than happy to cater for all your puffing needs with their large selection of cigarettes in all sizes and quantities. If you’re looking for a night out pit stop, then Spar (2 Queen Street, 029 2023 3303) is the 24-hour corner shop for you. Situated in the centre of town, it’s great for a late night dash between pub and club.
Post club action
Frankly, you’re going to be hard-pressed to find anything that’s fun/open after club closing time in Cardiff. Of course, it doesn’t have to be the end of your evening. For example, you could start a fight with a random stranger because they looked at you funny. After all, the police station that you’ll stay in for the night is open 24/7. Alternatively, head on down to a local supermarket and acquire yourself a trolley, where you can race for hours/minutes/until someone gets a serious injury. Failing that, simply complain to your friends about how drunk and hungry you are, or else tell them how much you love them.
Food now
Need a bit of late night nosh? Then there is no better place than Chippy Lane (Caroline Street, to you foreigners). This place is your one-stop street for all kinds of late night food sins. Whether it’s a kebab you’re after or the only more slightly upper class chips, cheese and gravy combo, this place does it all. Be sure to visit Tony’s Fish and Chip Bar (41–42 Caroline Street, 029 2034 2078) for all manner of deep fried delights. For the slightly more refined among you, why not indulge in a late night steak dinner at Charleston’s Brassiere (46 Caroline Street, 029 2022 7007), open ‘til 4am.
Other late night indulgences
Looking for a late-night venue to fulfil your entertainment needs? For those of you who are a bit flush with cash, you need look no further than Les Croupiers Casino (32 St Mary Street, 029 2038 2810). This may not be the swankiest of venues, (doubt ol’ blue eyes ever sang here) but you can end your night at a craps table and be fed complimentary sandwiches and free soft drinks. Ok so it’s not alcohol, but hey, it’s still free. Fancy a late-night play with some big balls? No we don’t mean those kind you dirty heathens. Head down to Hollywood Bowl (The Red Dragon Centre, Hemingway Road, 029 2047 1444) on a Saturday night for some late-night bowling action.
